And due to Pokemon’spopularity, other game developers have tried to duplicate it. But, one game that has a unique spin on the Pokemon formula is Coromon, an indie game that takes certain aspects from Game Freak’s license and blends them with its own ideas. So, while Coromon may seem like another Pokemon clone, some features make it worthy of having its own name in the JRPG genre.

5 Freedom to Adjust Stats

One of the most significant differences between Coromon and Pokemon is that each time a Coromon evolves, it gains a stat point which players can use to increase its HP, Attack, Speed, Sp. Attack, SP, Defense, or Sp. Defense. As hardcore Pokemon fans know, the only way to increase a Pokemon’s stats is by leveling up (but Trainers cannot choose which stat to raise) or using a special consumable.

Since players have complete freedom in choosing which stat to raise, it allows them to build unique team setups. Moreover, that means almost any Coromon (even the less popular sand-type ones) is viable since players can increase their strength as they level them. The same can’t be said about Pokemon since only creatures with near-perfect IV are viable to use for end-game content or online battles.

4 Titan Battles

From Elden Ring to Final Fantasy, mega boss battles are a staple of most popular JRPGs. And Coromon doesn’t hold back when it comes to boss battles since it has six different Titan-type Coromons. And while the Pokemon franchise has many legendary types in its roster, they fail to capture the essence Coromon has created around Titan battles.

That’s because Titan Coromons aren’t catchable and can easily wipe an entire team with ease. Furthermore, Titan Coromons have special attacks that other creatures can’t use, making them even more memorable to fight. But, of course, perhaps in a future update TRAGsoft will allow players to catch these powerful Titans.

3 Potential System

Undoubtedly, catching a shiny Pokemon in any game in the series is a memorable moment, especially since there’s a 1 in every 8192 chance of players finding this type of catch. Coromon has a similar game mechanic, but instead of only having one variant, each Coromon has three different “shiny” variants (Standard, Potent, and Perfect). But, there’s more to the Potential System than a simple color change – each variant is slightly stronger than the previous.

Each Potential variant grants extra stat points, which players can use to further increase a Coromon’s power. Players can improve the likeliness of finding a Potential Coromon by using a Potent Scent, making the process a bit easier than catching a Shiny Pokemon.

2 Available On Various Platforms

One of the biggest issues with the Pokemon franchise is that it is limited to Nintendo devices (apart from a couple of mobile games). Therefore, players cannot play Pokemon games unless they invest in, for example, a Switch or 3DS, something that not everyone will or can do. Considering Pokemon is one of the best-selling properties of all time, this exclusivity has clearly not hurt the franchise’s reach, but the fact Coromon is also available on PC and mobile devices works in its favor.

Coromon’s most notable platform is tvOS since the number of games available on this platform is quite limited. While Switch owners look forward to the release of Pokemon Scarlet or Violet, PC and mobile owners looking for something similar can try their hands at Coromon. In truth, there are not all that many games that can scratch that Pokemon itch.

1 Difficulty Settings

Yet another distinguishing feature between these two JRPGs is that Coromon lets players adjust the difficulty setting. In Pokemon, the difficulty setting is always the same, which means players can over-level their Pokemon and plow through most of the content. But, in Coromon, players can choose between four different difficulty settings Easy, Normal, Hard, and Insane.

In the Easy difficulty, players can revive a fainted Coromon with any healing item, and items in the shop cost less. The Normal difficulty has no significant changes, but the game is much more difficult on the final two settings. For example, on Hard, if a Coromon is defeated in combat in, they will be permanently released. This greatly increases the intensity and stakes of every battle.

Along with the features from Hard, the Insane difficulty only lets players catch one Coromon per area. This means players must carefully plan out each catch to ensure they have a balanced team as they will be unable to put together, for instance, an Ice-type squad at a moment’s notice.

Lastly, players can also create a custom difficulty, allowing them to construct an even harsher challenge than Insane.

Coromonis available now for Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, PC, and tvOS.
