Sometimes all a team needs is that one signing to rejuvenate their chances of silverware. A talisman that can change all their fortunes around through the ability he displays on the pitch. Either way, a club of United’s stature are nowhere near where they should be on the table today and something needs to change.

Here are 5 signings who could have made Manchester United win the league this year.
#5 Thiago Alcántara
Instead of forcing Paul Pogba to sit in a pivot alongside the irrational Ander Herrera, why not give the Frenchman a more worthy dance partner? Pogba is a £89m player that needs a controller to sit next to him to give him the creative freedom to roam.
Michael Carrick is a player of such calibre but his injury problems and slow pace have made him perform at a poorer rate. Thiago is the perfect player to compliment the box-to-box midfielder because he can sit to cover and also join the attack to create numerical advantages in the final third. Whatever action he chooses, he does it for the benefit of the team.
As the Spaniard currently debates over whether to sign a new contract or not, Mourinho should swoop in and make him an offer he can’t refuse. For his exceptional talent, it’d take a bid in excess of £70m to lure the midfielder away from Germany. If you haven’t seen the little maestro in action, trust me he’s worth every penny.
#4 Serge Aurier
I don’t know about you but I don’t feel Antonio Valencia does enough for Manchester United. For those who pick up on tactics more, you should have noticed that Jose’s United team allows the right-back ultimate attacking freedom. He prefers his left-back to be reserved while having Valencia bomb down the right.
For all the attacking opportunities he’s been afforded, Valencia hasn’t made use of the privilege. This is why United need an attacking full-back who is also smart in is decision making, this is where Serge Aurier steps in.
Apart from Dani Carvajal, there isn’t a full-back more effective in build-up play than Aurier. The Ivorian has created on average 1.23 chances per game he’s played, more than Valencia.
As a relatively low-profile player, United could sign the 24-year-old for a relatively cheap price. So instead of spending £89m on a player, you don’t really need, this time why not spend a third of that on a player who will significantly improve your attacking play.
#3 Sergio Ramos
When the Ramos to United rumours first broke out last summer, every single Premier League club held their breath. And they breathed a sigh of relief when the Spaniard instead signed a new Madrid contract.
That’s because the Real Madrid captain is one of the most influential figures on the planet. The Spanish centre-back is not only one of best defenders in the world, he’s also one of the best attackers. If you don’t believe me, check his stats.
The 31-year-old has scored 63 goals in his career, seven of which have come in this La Liga campaign. Those are incredible numbers for a midfielder let alone a centre back. As well as his incredible ability to score when his team most needs him, he’s a player that rallies those around him.
He organises his defensive partners and commands the whole team to work for each other. At United, he’d partner the young and athletic Eric Bailly helping the Ivorian become a top defender in the league. As Mourinho has lost the dressing room at Old Trafford, he needs leaders to help him rally the troops.
#2 Victor Lindelöf
It almost feels as though this transfer link just refuses to die and perhaps for good reason. At the tender age of 22, Victor Lindelöf almost embodies the characteristics of a 30-year-old veteran. He’s calm on the ball, good at organising fellow defenders and covering others. The Swedish international has played 36 games for Benfica, winning 56% of his duels in the process.
Every title winning team in the world lines up with a solid defence they can rely on. Lindelöf is a no nonsense defender that attempts to win every loose ball. On top of that, the Swede is adept at playing from the back. He possesses exceptional ball control as well as having an eye for a forward pass.
Jose Mourinho has already admitted he’s preparing himself for a busy summer and it looks as though the Benfica centre-back is on his shopping list. When asked about his opinions on the 22-year-old, Mourinho told Swedish newspaper Viasat, “Yes, he’s a good guy.”
It’s rumoured that Lindelöf would cost around £40m, something United could spend with their eyes closed.
#1 Ivan Perišic
For some unknown reason, Ivan Perišic is severely underrated by the footballing public. The Inter Milan winger has been in scintillating form this season and it’s no wonder that Manchester United are very interested in recruiting him.
In 24 Serie A starts, the Croatian has scored nine goals and assisted two; he’s one of the main reasons why a poor Inter side are still within touching distance of the Champions League spots. The winger has the ability to create something out of nothing, something not many players in the United squad can do at the moment.
Last month Mourinho was spotted in Croatia watching the national team play Ukraine. It was widely speculated that the United manager was in the country to personally negotiate with Perišic face to face. It’s rumoured that Inter would demand a fee north of £35m for the Croatian as he’s one of their most pivotal players. £35m is a minuscule fee when you think it could fire United back to title-winning ways.
